Tuesday marks a thousand days since Russia invaded Ukraine, igniting up war in Europe.
The day, is heavy in the hearts of Ukrainians in Edmonton, as they honour those who put their lives on the line and the civilian whose lives were lost.
Reflecting on the past two and a half years, Ukrainian Canadian Congress president Orysia Boychuk hopes the day can rekindle support in the prolonged armed conflict.
“Over time, we’ve noticed that people haven’t really been paying attention. So, this is an opportunity, not only to commemorate those who’ve lost their lives but also to let the world know that the war is continuing on,” said Boychuk.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress estimates that 65,000 Ukrainian newcomers have taken shelter in Alberta since the invasion on February 24, 2022.
