“You know this isn’t gonna have a happy ending…” You can say that again, Somerset. IMAX has revealed a new trailer for the 30th anniversary re-release of one of David Fincher’s all-timer classic films. Fincher’s Se7en originally opened in theaters in September 1995, which means they’re a little bit early on this 30th celebration but that’s all good. Se7en went on to earn a whopping $327M worldwide, almost 10x its budget, during its original release. Two detectives – a rookie and a veteran – hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives. The film stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and John C. McGinley. “Experience the Se7en deady sins in IMAX.” This re-release will only be in IMAX theaters to start in January 2025 right after New Years, though there might be more coming from WB eventually. Roger Ebert gave the film a full 4 stars, writing in his 1995 review: “I remember a shot in Murnau’s Faust (1926) in which Satan wore a black cloak that enveloped a tiny village below. That is the sensation Fincher creates here.” Damn! What a terrific film – it’s always worth a watch if you need a disturbing cinematic experience.

Two cops (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) track a brilliant and elusive killer who orchestrates a string of horrific murders, each kill targeting a practitioner of one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars in this acclaimed thriller set in a dour, drizzly city sick with pain and blight. David Fincher guides the action – physical, mental and spiritual – with a sure understanding of what terrifies us, right up to a stunning denouement that will rip the scar tissue off the most hardened soul. Se7en, also known as Seven, is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker David Fincher – his second feature at the time, after making Alien 3 (1992) and before going on to make The Game (1997). The screenplay is written by Andrew Kevin Walker. Produced by Arnold Kopelson and Phyllis Carlyle. The movie first opened in theaters in September 1995, earning $327M worldwide, becoming a sleeper hit and 7th highest-grossing film of the year. Fincher’s Se7en will re-release in IMAX theaters starting on January 3rd, 2025. For info + tickets, visit IMAX’s site.
