Some 10,000 skilled technicians are expected to be imported over the next three years under special visas, with detailed information to be released in the middle of next year, according to Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han.
Sun earlier on Thursday released the latest manpower projection, which estimated a shortage of 180,000 workers by 2028 – a third being skilled technicians such as plumbers, electricians and high-end manufacturing technicians.
He said yesterday that special visa arrangements will be made to ensure these workers remain in their industries before they become permanent residents.
”However, after seven years when they obtain permanent residency, you can’t have so many requirements,” he said.
”We surely cannot lock workers down to a particular job forever.”
