Garfield Ridge Bar Should Be Closed After 1 Killed, 2 Wounded In Shooting, Locals Say

GARFIELD RIDGE — Southwest Side residents and officials alike are calling for the permanent shutdown of a bar following a shootout Friday that left a man dead and two more injured.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Friday outside of Halina’s Pub, 7023 W. Archer Ave., police said. Two men, 27 and 31, approached an armed employee of the bar, 28, when an argument broke out and the group exchanged gunfire, according to police.

The 27-year-old man was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, police said. The 31-year-old man was shot in his leg and was listed in fair condition at the same hospital. The 28-year-old employee, who carried a legal firearm permit, was struck in his torso and was taken to Loyola Medical Center in critical condition, according to police.

The shooting transpired on the re-opening night of the bar, according to ABC Chicago. Area 1 detectives are investigating the shooting.

Ald. Marty Quinn (13th) said neighbors alerted him to a sale of Halina’s, and that his office was not alerted to the new ownership or plans to re-open because he did not lift a liquor moratorium for the location.

Quinn alerted city business inspector to Halina’s, and they were at the business when the shooting happened, the alderman said in a statement. Since the shooting, the bar has been temporarily closed, but Quinn is hoping for a permanent shutdown.

“I immediately reported the business to the Chicago Police Department and business license inspectors to be investigated for violating the liquor license moratorium,” Quinn said in a statement. “The business license inspectors were in the establishment investigating at the time of the incident and fortunately no one was injured.”

Garfield Ridge neighbors will rally outside Halina’s Sunday night, calling on the city to permanently close the pub and asking police to conduct more patrols of the area. The neighbors said in a statement they also want officials to consider stricter guidelines for concealed carry holders.

Quinn called on members of the community to turn out to a Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday at St Faustina Ward Hall, 5151 S. McVicker Ave. Quinn’s office will circulate a petition calling on the business’ permanent closure.
