Seeds of native tree species, including Narra, Ipil, Bani, and others, were donated to the city as part of the 7th Puerto Princesa Underground River International Bird Photography Race, a key event of the Subaraw Biodiversity Festival.
The donation was made by Arceli Tungol, an advocate for native tree conservation, founder of the Philippine Native Tree Enthusiasts (PNTE), and a trustee of the Foundation for the Philippine Environment Board. This happened during the race’s welcome dinner, attended by bird enthusiasts from across the Philippines and other countries, including China and Taiwan, in support of biodiversity efforts in Puerto Princesa.
Race Committee Chair and City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO) Chief Atty. Carlo B. Gomez, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) Superintendent Elizabeth Maclang, and City Administrator Atty. Arnel Pedrosa, representing Mayor Lucilo Bayron, received the donation.
Gomez emphasized the ecological relationship between native tree species and wildlife, particularly birds.
“Birds play a crucial role as agents of natural regeneration in forest ecosystems. They act as seed dispersers, ensuring genetic diversity and aiding in the propagation of various plant species. This symbiotic relationship between avifauna and flora is essential for maintaining the ecological integrity of our city’s forests,” he said.
“Native tree species like Narra, Ipil, and Bani provide ecological benefits uniquely suited to our local environment.
They offer food and habitat for wildlife, stabilize soil, and contribute to carbon sequestration, which is vital in combating climate change. By planting these species, we are not only conserving biodiversity but also reinforcing ecosystem services critical to human and environmental health,” he added.
PPSRNP Superintendent Elizabeth Maclang highlighted the event’s role in raising conservation awareness.
“As we gather to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Palawan’s avian wildlife, we are reminded of the vital role each of you plays in conservation through the art of photography,” she said.
The Puerto Princesa Underground River International Bird Photography Race, which began in 2015, is a collaboration between the PPSRNP, City ENRO, and the Wild Bird Photographers of the Philippines.
Bird-guiding seminars were held within the PPSRNP, equipping participants with bird identification skills and promoting sustainable ecotourism practices as part of the partnership.
The event was later integrated into the Subaraw Biodiversity Festival and continues to advocate for the preservation of Puerto Princesa’s natural heritage, inspiring community action and global awareness of its ecological treasures.
