David Crisp, a British businessman, said he sold luxury perfumes in Russia. He ignored UK rules, which could lead to ten years in prison.
Crisp confessed in a secret video. But after arresting him in 2023, authorities stopped investigating, even though they found 1.7 million pounds in hidden sales. Crisp says he didn’t break the rules on purpose.
The BBC found that no one in the UK was punished for breaking sanctions since Russia invaded Ukraine. Some people and politicians believe the UK is not strict enough. The UK is not punishing these illegal activities, which makes sanctions weak. Although there are sanctions, some Western companies still do illegal business with Russia.
Difficult words: luxury (expensive and pleasant to have but not important), hidden (not easy for other people to see or find), on purpose (not by accident).
