I get that Jude Bellingham is being asked to play a “deeper role” at times, but let’s not act like that’s an excuse for his piss poor showing against Liverpool yesterday. A player of his caliber should be able to adapt and still influence the game, especially after the standards he set last season.
Last year, Bellingham showed he could be among the best players in the world. His performances for Madrid and even England at times proved he could dominate games, whether it was scoring, creating, or driving his team forward. He was a step above the likes of Musiala, Wirtz, Foden, and others we constantly compare him to.
But games like the one against Liverpool remind us he still has areas to improve. His touch was off, his passing was safe, 0 creativity, bad box prescense… Instead of making excuses about his role, we should acknowledge that a truly elite player performs regardless of where they’re placed on the pitch. If he wants to cement himself as the clear standout of this generation, games like this one can’t happen. I feel like he needs a few more big game CL receipts.
What do you think—is the criticism fair, or is the “deeper role” argument valid?
